For that excact reason I play with a 4 wood. I can hit that arround 250 from tee on a good day and around 230 every day.

I carry 4 wedges so I dropped my 5 wood and picked up a 4 hybrid. I found that the 4 hybrid gave me the proper distance for 190 - 200 yds whereas the 5 wood was too long and my 4 iron too short.

In response to your question, I play in Ireland so for that reason the air is generally cooler and the ground conditions moist so I would favour a 3 wood over my 5, both are png fairway woods G15's the 5 would have a greater loft so I am actually thinking of going the other way dropping my 5 in favour for my 3 wood for that very reason having longer distand on my PAR 5's and also hitting longer PAR 3 's dependant upon wind speed etc. I also have a small fairway rescue wood which I use so that is possibly why my 5 wood has become obsolite?

I carry a 3,5,and 9 wood. I use my 3 wood on most long holes as I am a senior and it will get me 190 yards. It is also a great club to tee off with on some holes.

Hello Ben, good discussion topic. Here is what I am playing with, I use a 13.5 913d 3 Wood, and then I then i have 2 Hybrids 913 a 19.5 and 21.5 these two clubs fill the gap of the 5 wood for me, as the 21,5 goes about 215-230 for me and the 19.5 is where my 5 wood be replaced that goes about 230-250, just some options for getting rid of the 5 wood if you wanted to. The hybrids are real forgiving and the adjust to anyones game. End state no 5 wood for me.

I carry 1-3-5-7- woods. no hybrids. really trying to decide if I should ditch the 5-7 woods and add a 4hybrid. Though I only hit the 5/7 woods maybe twice a round at most. I think the next round I will leave them in the car add the 4th wedge and enjoy the day

I have both a 3, 4, and 5 wood. I usually take 2 of them along for each round and I choose by what course I am playing that day. If it is a shorter course I bring the 4 and 5 wood and if it is a bit longer I'll bring the 3 wood instead. So if you struggling to make a decision, try that method and see if it fits your game.

I just pulled my 3 wood out of my bag a few weeks ago. I have since shot 7 consecutive rounds under 80, I am now a 6 handicap. Coincidence in the scores and pulling my 3 wood? I think not. All the 3 wood did was get me in trouble trying to go for 250 yard shots into greens that I had no business trying. I also don't carry a 5 wood, but do carry a 17 degree hybrid and added another wedge to the setup...Working well so far for me

i have a 4 wood, versatile, gets me another wedge in the bag instead of 3 and 5 wood. whenever i play a short and small fairways course. i lower the loft on my 913f 4 wood and when im playing longer courses i get it back on a standard loft so i can get it high enough to make it stop nice and safe on the green whenever i attack a par 5 in 2 or i want an easy approach.

I carried a 5 wood for several years but switched to a 910H 19* 3 years ago. I've become very confident with the club and use it much like I did the 5 wood. It's a tad shorter and doesn't fly as high, but I find it fits my game better.

[/quote] Food for thought.....take a look at the Titleist hybrids.....hit the 17* and 19* and see what kind of carry and accuracy you get with those, both of the deck and the tee.....you might change you mind about a five wood......they are very versitle......like have two clubs in you bag......a five wood is a 19* club......

I carry a 5 wood, but no 3 wood. I find if I'm not going to hit driver, 5 wood is appropriate. I hit the 5 wood well, roughly 20 yards shorter than my driver. My lowest lofted hybrid is 21 degrees. The 5 wood is great for piping a nice tee shot that you need to keep in play.

I feel that a 5 wood is really critical to have in the bag. It's much easier to control than a 3 wood and easier to hit that long irons. I often hit my 5 wood and love it.

[/quote] I am with you tdogg, I love the hybrids.......except I went with a 15* for my 3 wood and geared it down to a 14.25 and it is perfect for off the tee and the deck.......can out drive most people with it......will have to look at the new line in the spring.......really like the 15* because I hit it easily with a slight draw and on a windy day it is truly awesome........

I personally do not carry a 5 wood, but with the upcoming release of the 915's, I am seriously considering it. Not sure I would keep it in the bag all of the time, but a few of the courses I do play a LONG and I think it would benefit me.

I carry a 5 wood or 2 iron depending on conditions. if its windy i go with the 2 iron if its a nice day i play the 5 wood.

As my handicap got lower, I realized that I should only hit driver when absolutely necessary (or if the risk-reward factor plays a role in where I am currently sitting relative to par in my round). The three wood, (I play a 913 F.d. 15 deg Diamana Whiteboard D+), is an extremely versatile club off the tee and is a great shot to have in the bag. Sometimes, I feel that the mindset of "not hitting the club that goes the furthest" makes you focus more on control and the target rather than distance; this leads to less error. Get the 5 wood! It's good to have in the bag for the tee and the fairway. Cheers TT, CH

My fairway wood/hybrid makeup is strictly by loft and not by club number as the correlation between the two are all jumbled up nowadays. I have 17, 21 and 23 degree fairway woods and a 25 and 28 degree hybrid. This takes care of my distance gaps, which according to my fitter is how you select golf clubs. If someone wants to attach numbers to these clubs, I suppose the fairway woods would be a 4,5 & 7 and the hybrids a 5 & 6. Anyway, this is what works for me

Yeah, that really makes sense then to retire the 3W and get something that fits the yardage you need. A 19* Fairway may do it since you're so close on with the 19* hybrid (assuming you're looking for exactly 225y). If you want more, then maybe the 17*. For shaft, if you have a 913 driver already and like how it feels, then I'd say to use the same shaft and go 10 grams heavier.

I didn't see if you posted what degree your 3W is. Since there isn't really a club that is named a 3W or 5W, it really just comes down to the loft on a fairway wood that works for you. Also, with the newer Titleist clubs, you can change that angle to best suit your swing and that will likely change your average distance. I have my Titleist 913 hybrid (21*) and my Fairway (17*) in the standard setting, whereas I have my 913 8.5* set at the D-2, which is .75* down. Some may even call what I call my 3W actually 5W at 17* loft.

There is so much more customization ability these days (and these Titleist clubs are the best...). Off topic, I hit my 913 D3 and my buddy's new TM side by side on Thursday. Of course the shaft and loft were different and all, but my I hit my Titleist about 50 yards further and it felt great.

I think you need to find a shop that can let you take a fairway wood to the range and play around with it. Maybe one in the Titleist club trial program? (http://www.titleist.com/golf-club-trial/)

FYI, just giving my own experience... I'm not a fitter and if you don't already have a 913, I'd recommend seeing a fitter to get the best shaft for you.
