I've been struggling the last few rounds with my driver, blocking everything and just all over the place. Short game is saving me from high scores thankfully but my scoring could be better if I can keep it in play off the tee. A few days ago played in a charity event and same thing, all over the place. So after the event, me and a bud played more golf at my home course and we started talking and he just told me "tempo". Took a few slow practice swings and the next thing I know I'm hitting fairways. Not swinging outta my a** and I feel like my whole body is moving towards the target versus letting my arm do all the work when trying to swing outta my a** which I think was the problem. Sure felt nice to hit some fairways, just gotta keep that feeling going....

    Tempo. Dasssssss it...

Feel your pain, pal. Have that very same issue every now and then. My tempo gets me with my irons, trying to overpower them and never getting to the top with a smooth tempo. Next step is to go see Tim, my PGA fix it doctor. And his answer is always the same, tempo, Chuck tempo. As long as we have playing, tempo seems to be our nemesis. At least we know what it is and how to fix it. After playing league and traveling softball for 26 years, those arms just seem to get in the way. Cheer, with respect. See ya in September.

Well, your nickname is "Speedy". This game is a heck of a challenge some days. Glad to hear you locked it back in. Have fun!
  4. I have an interesting tempo-related story. I never struggled with tempo until recently after I started videoing my swing at the range. I love the benefits video provides, but I found myself hurrying my swing so I wouldn't have as much "idle" video to review when looking at the result on the screen. I was letting my impatience with reviewing the video (behind the camera) cause my swing to suffer. In retrospect, it's a silly problem I've given to myself, but it took a while to shake it.

Tempo IS important and I can hurt my swing even when I'm trying to help it!
  5. Hey Speedy,

Tempo is a great skill to learn and this usually adds consistency. A slightly slower backswing helps ensure you get into a good position at the top, but once you get into that position it’s important to maximise power and distance.

    Thanks

I couldn't agree more. That has been my focus this year and for some reason, I am finally allowing myself to get all the way back before my downswing. This has kept me behind the ball and really helped with solid impact. Fast and jerky sets the pace, slow and steady wins the race!

There is an LPGA event that comes thru town once a year and I enjoy going out and watching the women play. They have such great tempo, Smooth, effortless and CONSISTENT. If you follow a professional during a tournament it is amazing their tempo remains the same all throughout the round.
For me I try to take the club head back slow.

Tempo is key, however, when I get on the course I get into swinging as hard as I can. I'm playing today and will remind myself before every shot, TEMPO!
  9. Maintaining TEMPO throughout my 18 Hole round is quite a challenge. Is there a way to get feedback from
practice swings to determine is my TEMPO is the same as my last DRIVE for example?

After grip, aim and setup, it's all about the tempo.

I've learned more about tempo from watching the LPGA than the PGA.

My swing is complicated;way inside, loop at the top to get back on plane and a late release.

    Without tempo, id be doomed!

I think of a song and it goes a little like this, “low and slow, that is the tempo.”
    Thanks Beastie Boys!
  14. Tempo is key. It's something that we all forget about from time to time. Once I get a driver in my hand I have to remind myself constantly about tempo as all I want to do is smash it. I've watched some great vids on YouTube about tempo. It's a real eye opener and helps your game so much, it's quite a simple fix

Sam Snead used to practice his tempo hitting balls barefoot to the"The Blue Danube" waltz playing on a Victrola. You young guys may have to Google Victrola. Way before ear buds..... lol
    Can't argue with his tempo.
