  1. Hi everybody here's a question for you

    When you play a new course do you just hit and hope or use course management and look to see where the trouble is and things like carries over a bunker etc on tee shots

    So many times I play a new course with people and they constantly get in trouble by finding bunkers or water and when I say didn't you see the trouble they look at me as though I am stupid

    Course management for me is vital to a good round

    With all the tech available to us these days, there's really no excuse to just "hit and hope." For those of us who maintain a handicap, the USGA has a great app that will give you a bird's eye view of the hole you're playing. Of course, there are many GPS based apps available for you to choose from if you prefer something different.

    I try to find out as much as I can before playing a new course. When I travel and play by myself, I will ask to be put in with someone familiar with the course. If available I will pick up a yardage book. I might be an oddball with this, but if I'm traveling to a destination with a selection of desired courses to play, I will always try to play one course at least twice instead of a new course every day. On my last trip to Palm Springs, I played one course 3 times in one week, and by the 3rd round I was able to shave 5 strokes off because I knew more about the course.

    Definitely look at the layout ahead of time. Plan my approach and keep range finder close by!

    When playing a new course, I try to use a GPS so I can see where those trouble spots are. Course management is vital not only for a good round but to make sure I enjoy the day. No one likes being in trouble all day.

    I usually look online to see if they have flu overs of the holes or 18 Birdies is a good app to see what every hole lay out looks like.

    Course management is the name of the game on any course. Hit and hope is not golf.

  9. I learned a valuable lesson when playing without a course layout. Now every time on a new course I get one to better manage my misses.

    For me, a big part of course management is being comfortable with my 115 - 120 yard shot. That’s my target and most confident wedge shot. So backing off a club to get the approach is a key.

    Got to know where NOT to hit it.Just part of the formula for lower scores.

    Always do my homework before playing a new course. Checking course website for flyovers, etc. I use the Golfshot app during my rounds and a rangefinder. The hit and hope method is a recipe for not having fun during the round, IMHO.
