T Grind or Low Bounce K

  1. We have some bunkers at our course which are soft/too much sand and others firm/little sand. I already have a 54D which helps with heavy sanded bunkers if needed.

Wondering what people think between a T grind and Low bounce K for the firm green side bunker. I’m quite shallow with bunkers but don’t know if it’s better to have the bounce over the whole sole (k grind) or maybe more 1/4 to 3/4 like the t grind.

Any help here would be great as I don’t have these wedges at our club to test. Thankyou

I have been using the SM9 58-04T in firm green side bunkers and absolutely love it. Doesn't works as well in soft fluffy sand in greenside bunkers. I hope that helps.

These are very, very different animals. I was considering both as well and decided to consult with a friend (local Club Champ and very strong player) who custom ordered a low bounce K grind. He told me his experience was that the wide sole of the LBK really made it difficult to use for fairway shots, even in softer conditions. Yes, it is a good bunker wedge when conditions aren't too firm or wet, but it is a trade off otherwise. I took his feedback to heart as he won his CC with his short game (which is why I asked him).

The T grind is a very custom sole and really should be used by a golfer with a fair amount of skill/confidence from different lies. I'm using an M grind for the versatility but have an L grind for firm fairways and/or minimal sand in bunkers.

I'd strongly suggest finding a club with some demos to try before you buy either of these. Make sure you try them in the conditions you are likely to experience!

I just bought the 60T due to its versatility all around the green - both fairway and rough, but also bunkers. Can't wait to try it out!

I have the 56-12D bent to 54 and 58-04T bent to 59. Both work well. I had a 56-08M and its only shortcoming was hitting through thick grass. The D grind plows right through it. I picked up a 58* low bounce K (my son has it now) and didn't see much difference vs the 58-14K other than playing back in my stance a little more with the latter.

I have watched Bob Vokey and his team fit players with wedges and he does not let them see the loft and grind as he hands them the clubs to hit. Point being, what works for one person does not necessarily work for someone else. With significantly varying bunkers mentioned in your post, you either need to fit into a wedge that falls between high and low bounce or consider carrying both. Ideally, do a in-person wedge fitting to best factor in your personal swing and playing conditions. Good luck with it.

In Tom Y's response he mentions that the wide sole of the low bounce K makes it difficult to play fairway shots.I agree and think that comment is key.To me the T would be a little more versatile, albeit still requiring a certain amount of skill to hit consistent shots. For my money, the M grind is the most versatile. I have a 60.08 M that is my go to bunker club.I can also open it up and hit flop shots and other finesse shots around the green.
  8. The T and Low Bounce K are obviously two very different grinds. For fluffy bunkers the Low Bounce K will be your better choice for various open and closed face positions on the wedge. The T grind you will only be able to use wide open at best...IMHO

I play the T but when I come across soft sand I switch to my Low Bounce K...unlike other posts I have not had a problem playing either out of the fairway or rough on the course...they perform similar. Of course, they feel different with the turf interaction so that might be an issue to you.

The T is a higher skill wedge to play vs. the Low Bounce K...I agree with Mike on this point.

    Cheers!

Interesting that like Mike M, I have a 60.08 M grind. Mine is a WedgeWorks custom as I requested a semi-square leading edge, which I do like. My primary sand wedge is an SM9 54.12 D grind (they didn't make this configuration in the SM8 versions). I'm presently experimenting with an SM8 48.10 F grind that I have ground more to an S Grind with some heel relief as well. This is an option vs. the set matching W wedge (T100S irons).

Anyway, I feel like I can get under the ball in most lies with the 60*. With the SM8s, I had to be different with the 54 M grind and 60 D grind, which was not a good combo for me. I always want to be able to get the 60 opened up if necessary, and the D grind only let me do this in fluffy lies. Tight lies/hardpan were not comfortable for me. I'm glad that Vokey changed the specs with the SM9 series!
